The meal was a great experience! Although there was a wait, the recommendations from our waiter was extremely tailored to our interest and delicious. It was a little bit noisy, it was perfect for a lively delicious night out with friends. (Pre-covid review - posted fashionably late)

I normally get same things if available (they relate Tapas), grilled octopus, black squid noodle dish and some salad. Today, We went for a birthday dinner to taste Iberico. It wasn't on the menu but you should ask, then you can get slices with nice crunchy toast with tomato topping. We also tried fish dish, it was a bit salty but the Indian infused mustardy sauce was excellent. Roasted lamb served with parsnip purée was nicely done. It was pretty rich but the had nice sweetness too. Beef croquet served with smoky tomato base sauce (?) It was great but beef seasoning was a bit spicy, so overwhelmed the taste of the sauce. The bartender was very knowledgeable, we had good conversation with her. If they can balance the seasoning of the meat or fish and servicing sauce, it would have been better but it was great dinner overall. Also please note that sometime they don't have the exact dish even listed on the website since they rotate menus, so enjoy what they have since they pick ingredients in season and cook them accordingly!

Wow. The sangria at Ataula is by far the best sangria I've ever had - they (and Chesa back when they were open) have ruined sangria for me. The key must be in the sous vide mix of brandy, spices and fruit that they use. With the sangria out of the way, let's talk about the dining experience. I made plans with a girlfriend to meet at Ataula around 7:45pm on a Saturday night. I was a little worried about getting seats, based on other reviews, but there were actually four seats at the bar open when I got there. A wait for the tables was closer to an hour, but they serve the full menu at the bar so it didn't matter to us. We were promptly greeted by a friendly bartender/server who helped us settle on the sangria by giving us samples. He also ran us through the menu with his recommendations, which we ended up following. We ordered the Seafood Paella (Paella Ataula) and the Pato. The pato - sous vide duck confit with this delicious beet romesco sauce and potato patties, was amazing. It was probably the best duck I've ever had. The paella was full of shellfish and octopus with a really good flavor - and it wasn't too salty which often happens for paella's I've had. Overall I thought the food was right on par, if not better than Chef Chesa's now closed Chesa on NE Broadway. We didn't leave room for dessert but they had a few tempting options like the Olive Oil Cake. I can't believe it took me this long to come here. I'm already dreaming of my next glass of sangria and scoop of paella. We'll be back for sure!

I recommend coming here with a larger group if you can. We had a party of 12, although we split in half to make sharing easier. We ordered a variety of small plates to share, as well as two paellas - the seafood and the negre. Honestly I don't remember what each dish was called but simply put, everything was amazing and worth a try. The combination of ingredients and flavors was very innovative. The xeese bursted inside your mouth and was so creamy - no idea how they made it like that! We loved the paellas equally. The seafood tasted so fresh and the rice was very soft. Some paellas can be dry but the technique here has definitely been mastered. We ordered a pitcher of sangria and it was excellent. Dinner was a little pricey overall but definitely a solid choice to take your date. :)

Our unofficial day after the unofficial last day of summer begins with the Chef himself ain't-to-proud-to-serve water and welcoming us at our table! Hard to follow up, but our server Emmet did us just as good with his nonchalant friendly charm that set our street-side supper to vote again Ataula as our fav tapas in PDX. Not just a drink sheet heading, they truly pride themselves in signature cocktails. Chancing for something different each visit has been a ritual that has never disappointed. Recommended always ~ Paella Ataula & Bombas Ataula.

I can't say enough good things about Ataula. The chef, who shortly after our visit got a James Beard nom, checks in with guests and delivers and talks about some of the plates. On a busy night how many places of this caliber can say that? My husband tried a cocktail and I enjoyed a red wine recommended to me. The food was next level. The potato's Bravas are a can't miss, especially after you learn the process to make them. The Mar I Montanya - wow! This was a chicarron with a picked mussels nestled inside sitting on top of an acidic aoli. Sounds strange but trust me so good! We tried a special of sliced ham with tomato glass bread which was wonderful. I loved the salty cod fritters and also we tried a dish with honey, marscapone and salmon on toast. I could go on and on but instead I will say we didn't have one dish that didn't taste amazing and I wish I could try more. Service was excellent and recommendations were thoughtful. We waited for a table at 630 and a bar spot opened up after 10 mins so we really lucked out on a weekend night.

Wow! This place is a real find. The food here is amazing, and the attention to detail and the love of food that emanates from every dish is great. We had several dishes. All were good. Some were amazing and transcendent (the Bou and Montadito come to mind). Even the less great dishes (Nuestras Bravas, for example) were still good--it's just there are better items on the menu. The food reminded me of the food you get when tapas bar hopping in Barcelona--and it was as good as that too. We wanted some of the ham, but the chef was not in the house the day we went. He's the only one allowed to cut the ham. This place gets busy fast. It's best to arrive at 4:00 for the 4:30 opening and be the first (or among the first 10 or so) through the door. Otherwise, you may not get in without a long wait.

PSA: You must come here for the Arros Negre. It is hands down my favorite paella dish and Ataula does not disappoint! Ataula is located in the Alphabet district but away from all the traffic surrounding the main area. The interior is cute and feels like a Spanish tapas place you would visit on a summer day. The staff is well versed in the menu and all their wines are from Spain only. Out of the whole menu, you have to try the Arros Negre dish. It's a paella dish that's different because it's made with black squid ink. When you first view it, you question if you got the right dish because it's completely black. But once you dig it, you become addicted and can't stop. I highly recommend trying the croquettes as well as they're nice and crunchy on the outside but have a blast of flavor on the inside. As much as I loved the arros negre, it's more pricey than I expected it to be. Given that I had tried it in Spain for a lower price, I was hoping the price would be comparable. Regardless, if you have never tried this dish, you must come to Ataula and try it for yourself.

My bf and I tried this spot, and it was amazing! We tried the following: Ataula Montadito- so so good! It was thin salmon on little rectangle coca bread with mascarpone yogurt and honey. Croquetas- this was fish in a lightly battered ball with a smoked sauce. Soo good Nuestras Bravas- this was potato that is very thinly sliced in layers with a delicious sauce! We also got their Sunday IBERICO special (I forgot the actual name), but it had delicious flavors and crispiness. Some parts of it was a bit too salty (but personally I don't eat much salt). This spot is a must try! Best tapas!

Long wait for a table, good service, and good food. We couldn't make reservations, since we only had three in our party, and ended up waiting around an hour on a Saturday night. When we got there, the hostess pointed to a table we would have since the couple was probably going to finish up in the next 30 minutes or so, but she ended up giving it to a part of a bigger group who had an overflow... which was disappointing and misleading. Luckily the service and food were really great, which made for a good night. We ordered the Cojonudo, Croquetas, Paella Ataula, Nuestras Bravas, and Mini Rossejat Negre, which were all really delicious, but just really small portions. The Mini Rossejat Negre had sort of a strong seafood/fish flavor, so I'd veer from it if you're sensitive to that kind of taste. The Nuestras Bravas were cooked perfectly, they were crispy on the outside and soft inside. All the flavors came together really well.
